Galleria d’Arte

EXPLORA II showcases an immersive selection of artworks from renowned and emerging artists, enriching every space. Key installations include:

  • Marine Encounters by Prince Hussain Aga Khan: a captivating marine photography collection that highlights the beauty of underwater life and the importance of marine conservation. This visual tribute to the world’s oceans, gifted to the MSC Foundation by Hussain Aga Khan himself, is more than just a showcase of the ocean’s beauty – it’s a powerful reminder of the need to protect vital marine ecosystems.
  • Romeo and Juliet by Emilio Isgró: A unique installation of 38 acrylic-on-book elements by the celebrated conceptual artist. Known for his “erasure” technique, Isgró invites viewers to reflect on themes of memory and language.

Our Captains

Captain Pietro Sinisi

Born in Rome, Captain Pietro Sinisi brings over 30 years of experience and a dedication to crafting unforgettable guest experiences.

Captain Pietro Sinisi

Captain Pietro Sinisi, born in Rome, began his seafaring career at Acciaiuoli Nautical Technical School in Ortona, Italy, and served as an Officer in the Italian Navy, including roles at the Livorno Naval Academy and on the Nave Bradano. Transitioning to the cruise industry in 1995, he advanced quickly, achieving his first command by 2008. With over 30 years of maritime experience, Captain Pietro is renowned for his commitment to safety and exceptional leadership, earning the Navy Bronze Medal of Merit in 2022 for his courageous rescue of eleven crew members during severe weather in 2018.

Outside his duties, Captain Pietro values time with his family, travel, boating, and diving excursions. A history enthusiast, he enjoys reading about legendary explorers and admiring historic galleons. In his spare time, he also finds joy in motorcycling, open-sea swimming, running, and bonding over bowling with his son. As Captain of Explora Journeys, he brings both expertise and a deep passion for crafting memorable experiences at sea.

Captain Diego Michelozzi

Tuscan born Captain Diego Michelozzi comes from four generations of seafarers, valuing the importance of preserving family tradition.

Captain Serena Melani

With her 32-year career at sea, Captain Serena Melani is a role model for inclusivity, being one of very few female senior leaders in the maritime industry.

Serena Melani

Captain Serena Melani is the Master of EXPLORA II, the second ship of Explora Journeys. Appointed Master of EXPLORA I in June 2022, she successfully launched the ship in 2023 and led its inaugural season. With 32 years at sea, Captain Serena is a trailblazer for inclusivity, one of the few female senior leaders in the maritime industry.

After graduating from the Nautical Technical School in her hometown of Livorno, Italy, she gained early experience on oil tankers, gas carriers, RoRo ships, and livestock carriers. She then spent seven years with Carnival Cruises, rising from 3rd Officer to 1st Officer. Most recently, she spent 12 years with Regent Seven Seas, becoming their first female Master and the first Italian female Master of a passenger ship. In 2020, she made history as the first female Master to launch a cruise ship.

When not at sea, Serena splits her time between Italy and her home on Korčula Island in Croatia with her husband. Passionate about travel, she has a special connection to Africa and the Dolomites, in Northern Italy.

Our Godmother

Rosalba Giugni

Rosalba Giugni, pioneering environmentalist and founder of Marevivo, Italy’s leading non-profit organisation focused on marine conservation, has been named Godmother of EXPLORA II.

Rosalba Giugni

The role of a ship’s Godmother holds deep significance in maritime tradition, symbolising good luck and protection for the vessel and its crew. For EXPLORA II, the newest addition to the Explora Journeys fleet, the choice was clear: Rosalba Giugni, a pioneering environmentalist and founder of Marevivo.

Giugni’s selection reflects Explora Journeys’ commitment to ocean conservation and sustainability. For over 40 years, she has dedicated her life to protecting the Mediterranean Sea and its ecosystems. As founder of Marevivo, Italy’s leading marine conservation non-profit, she has also been instrumental in advocating for legislative changes to protect vital marine habitats and fight against harmful practices like drift netting. Her work also focusses on fostering a deeper connection between people and the ocean, inspiring future generations of environmental stewards.

The partnership between Explora Journeys and Giugni is built on a shared vision for marine conservation. For nearly a decade, Marevivo has collaborated with MSC Group, Explora Journeys’ parent company, to promote ocean protection in the Mediterranean, with support from the MSC Foundation. This partnership underscores a mutual commitment to sustainability and ecological transition within the cruise industry.

As Godmother of EXPLORA II, Giugni blessed the ship in a traditional ceremony, cutting a ribbon to release a champagne bottle against the bow, wishing the ship and its journeys good fortune. This momentous occasion was attended by distinguished guests and dignitaries.

EXPLORA II, with its innovative design, embodies the values Giugni has championed throughout her career. As a trailblazer in marine conservation and an inspiration to women and young people worldwide, she is the perfect symbol of strength, leadership, and dedication. Her role as Godmother honours her extraordinary contributions to the environment and will inspire generations to come.
